a day in the life

Welcome!

This is my first blog post of 2025 (hold the applause) and the start of a new series where I will be sharing an intimate insight into my practice and experience of being a professional photographer. In this series, you will see behind the scenes of what I do, how I do it, and why.

When I think about what it is I do, I often find it difficult to simply define what that practice is.

Am I a …

Portrait photographer?

Photojournalist?

Street Photographer?

Film photographer?

Fashion photographer?

Intimate photographer?

Yes - all of the above and more.

And yet, each title feels inadequate. There is a deep complexity to making a photograph that has nothing to do with the camera itself or any photographic equipment; lights, lenses, filters. After all, the the physical act of taking a photo takes a fraction of a second.

The camera is a tool for learning how to see without a camera.
— Dorothea Lange

At heart, I feel more like a philosopher and anthropologist …with a camera. There is a familiarity in every face I photograph; perhaps I am seeing part of myself. We are all connected. When I make a photograph, I want to understand - the situation or the person; to be a witness to our common humanity.

This is why, above all else, my most crucial and precious tools will always be my empathy and my eyes.
